On Saturday, January 28th, Sunny Fields Botanical Park will be having a Winter Park Day from 10am-3pm. The trails will be open for hiking, snowshoeing or viewing wildlife. Our very own Executive Director and creator of Sunny Fields, Bill Horman, will be on hand for a pruning demonstration and will discuss the sights and sounds of the park in winter. Sunny Fields board members will be present to give tours and answer any questions you may have. There is no charge to attend this event and everyone is encouraged to bring their families and friends. Remember that this is an outdoor event, so be sure to dress appropriately. A campfire will be going and hot beverages will be provided to help chase away the chill of winter. There are many plants of winter landscape interest planted around the park. While walking the trails be sure to look for the exfoliating bark of the Seven-Son Flower (Heptacodium miconioides) and peeling bark of the Pekin Lilac tree (Syringa pekinensis). Watch for the thorns of the native Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos) and view the interesting bark and structure of the Corktree (Phellodendron amurense). The bright berries of native Michigan holly (Ilex verticillata) and the fruits of the Flowering crabapples (Malus ssp.) will glow in the winter landscape while providing food for our resident birds. Look for the turkeys, cardinals, nuthatches and chickadees that are foraging throughout the park. We hope you will join us at our Winter Park Day, and make it a success. Remember this is a free event and any donations made go towards maintaining and keeping this treasure open for the education and enrichment of the community.
